Hartley's Nurseries is now in the hands of the 6th generation of Hartleys - a rare achievement for a family business these days. Bill Hartley, a former international athlete, is the current owner of the business together with his wife Ann-Louise. Their daughter, Annabelle, manages the horticulture side of the business, whilst their son, Tom, is a professional cricketer, playing for Lancashire County Cricket Club and also the Manchester Originals in The Hundred. In January 2024, he was selected for the England Test Squad for their tour of India. Hartley's Nurseries is located within the land of the family smallholding, which has been run as a horticultural business by the Hartley family since 1890.
Bill's athletics career spanned the 1970s and 1980s and his achievements included European Gold and Commonwealth Silver medals. His race was the 400m hurdles, plus he was a regular member of Britain's men's 4x4 relay team. Ann-Louise has over 30 years experience as a florist, since she completed her NVQ in floristry at Myerscough College back in 1993. Combined with her bachelors degree in Management, Ann-Louise has a wealth of industry knowledge to share with the Hartley's team.
Hartley's Nurseries nestled in Merseyside, has developed over the years from a small fruit and vegetable shop to a large plant centre and flower shop. Hartley's are specialist growers of bedding plants and hanging baskets, with every plant carefully nurtured and grown by our expert team. Full of knowledge and passion for all things plants, our team are on hand to chat with customers and offer helpful advice on all things plant related.
Hartley's flower shop is well known for producing bespoke bouquets and flowers for all occasions, creating beautiful floral arrangements with the finest quality stems. Ann-Louise is one of the few people in Britain who buys cut flowers and plants directly from the Dutch Auctions, being able to connect directly with Holland each morning via computer link. This means that Hartley's flowers arrive directly from the growers, ensuring the best quality, freshest blooms available for our florists to use. Hartley's is proudly a member of the British Florist Assocation, the trade association for professional florist shops in the UK and accredited member of the Good Florist Guide. Being recognised by independent industry experts means you can trust that all our flowers and bouquets are of the very best standard.
Our popular Cafe at Hartley's was added back in 2011, thanks to a European grant to build a 50 seater cafe. A lovely edition to our growing Nursery, our air-conditioned cafe serves drinks, hot food and home-baked cakes every day. The perfect environment to catch up with friends, enjoy the surroundings of our plants and watch the world go by.
In 2017, Hartley's created an innovative Flower Room for fresh flower retail sales. This mirrored and refrigerated flower display area, together with the installation of a cooling and heating system in the Cafe, was part funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. These two improvements have both proved great successes ensuring increased customer satisfaction.
Hartley's Nurseries is situated in Merseyside, access from the A59 is easy - just take the turning off Robbin's Island roundabout at Lydiate. There is plenty of free car parking on site.
